The Mobility Directorate provides support to the IETF Internet Area Directors regarding matters relating to IP layer mobility mechanisms and impacts of mobile hosts to other Internet protocols. The directorate focuses mainly on the output of MIP4, MIP6, MONAMI6, MIPSHOP, NETLMM, HIP, and NEMO groups, but follows also the developments in groups that are affected by mobility mechanisms, provide specific assistance to mobile nodes (such as DNA), or need to work together with mobility mechanisms (such as SHIM6).

The directorate consists of a small group of selected individuals chosen for their technical knowledge in the area and their willingness to work with the Area Directors and Working Groups to review specifications and provide other forms of assistance.

The main task of the directorate is to review documents from mobility-related groups (1) upon their approval as WG -00 documents and (2) before they are sent for IETF LC and IESG review. The former review focuses on architectural and top-level protocol design issues, the latter is a final, full review. Note that the directorate is not a formal review body; the IESG has that role. Therefore, comments made by the directorate have no more weight than those made by individual IETF participants. However, the directorate can be thought of as an easily reachable group of individuals who have committed to providing input.

Other tasks of the directorate include

Members of the directorate are expected to allocate sufficient time to participate in monthly conference calls, post reviews for 1-2 documents per month, follow all mobility related groups to some extent, and follow at least one group well enough provide advice on all of their documents.
