The IETF Routing & Addressing Directorate

Advises: For reporting purposes, IETF & IAB Chairs; Generally, provides advice to the community at large. The Routing and Addressing Directorate is tasked to stay abreast of activities and provide coordinated updates to the community, including the IESG and IAB, about the following lines of action: (1) Complete the Routing and Addressing problem statement. (2) Determine applicable objective metrics and identify applicable trend analyses for them. (3) Document the underlying causes of perceived scaling problems. (4) Review proposed solution directions in terms of expected impact in addressing scaling issues as well as architectural soundness. (5) Encourage and nurture short term solution proposals, prototypes and appropriate standards activity. (6) Encourage and nurture relevant research activities directed towards long term solutions. Originally established with five members, the expectation is to expand it to roughly ten people with different experience and expertise. It is expected to focus on communication and coordination. It will not be charged with picking solutions or choosing a technical direction. That will be a community decision. This Directorate is expected to have a lifetime of about 5 years (with a first review of membership after six months, followed by an annual review). Specific objectives of the Directorate will be: (i) On a continuing basis, survey existing efforts on the lines of action listed above, and facilitate discussion of effectiveness and timeliness of proposals and problem statements, etc. (ii) Report in writing to the IAB, IESG and the community regularly (at least once per IETF meeting) about those efforts, and highlight specific gaps or concerns about progress. In addition to these substantive reports, provide a few lines of progress report on a two-weekly basis. (iii) Provide feedback to IESG, IAB and IRSG on any relevant proposed activities in the area (e.g., WG or RG charters, BOF or workshop proposals, etc). Provide community updates about those efforts (e.g., in the form of an Internet-Draft), and highlight specific gaps or concerns about progress. (iv) Encourage appropriate communication with all the identified constituencies. The Directorate has its own mailing list and conducts its meetings autonomously, but it is tasked to work in a transparent manner, with its proceedings available to the IAB, IESG and the community.
