Expectation for NomCom Members
The Nomination Committee (NomCom) is open to all regular participants of the IETF meetings, it consists of:
- 10 randomly selected members among volunteers before the Second / July IETF meeting
- Some liaison non-voting members (for example IAB liaison).
The 10 voting members will review and select candidates for IAB open positions, IESG open positions (IETF Area Directors), IETF Trust and IETF LLC Board members (the legal entities overseeing the IETF).
Therefore, this is an important function as NomCom members represent the global IETF community and can influence the composition of the IETF leadership. Being part of NomCom requires time, energy, passion, and interest for the IETF.
The exact rules and procedures are formally described in RFC 7437 (soon to be updated) but NomCom members are expected to:
- Be physically present at the Third / November IETF meeting where they will spend most of their time conducting interviews with the nominees for the open positions;
- Participate in NomCom teleconferences/email discussions during their 15-month term. The time will vary based on the published NomCom schedule. The teleconferencing schedule is around 1 hour/week;
- Handle the NomCom discussions and interviews as confidential;
- Represent the global IETF community.
While it is a big time/energy investment by the NomCom members, it is also how the IETF community selects its leadership: so, NomCom members are key to the future of the IETF. It is also a nice opportunity to learn more about the IETF processes and have a transversal view of all IETF areas and of the work done by the IAB.
