And spam isn't a problem at the POP stage, other than it's
existence. Spam is a problem at the SMTP stage, due to DoS, relay
attempts, etc.

In SMTP, the sender can also request amplification of the spam, via
multiple RCPT TO's. That's impossible in NNTP.
