Unfortunately I am saddled with MS outlook and its threading is woefull. I
get two distinct threads for the same subject line
Its not really threading but grouping.

Being able to group discussions logically seems like a good idea to me.

For example discussions on sender identification can be grouped together and
then SPF, DK and others split into sub groups

Filtering technology can be another forum, etc. etc.

Logically the top levels would be the six top discussion levels already
designated.

Also notifications are better dealt with. I for example can be notified
whenever a comment is made about DK but not receive a notification about
SPF, but I can sign on to SPF at will.

Notification are only sent once, not one for every time someone makes a
comment. (less mail traffic)

As far as Polling goes I hadn't even thought about it. but phpBB handles
"articulated polling" quite well if a poll is started it is easy to add
comments for and against. although to my mind polling would be done after
all arguments are placed

Sub commitees can be easily established with multiple levels of permissions.

So say a sub committee is put together to flesh out NSMPT (new smtp), other
list members may be barred frome viewing the discussions altogether, or
perhaps allowed "read only" access.

All these things can be done now (more or less), I just like the fact it is
all in the same place and consistant.

But I think John has the final say, and it appears to me he has decided
against any change. So Be It.
