It sounds to me as though you're as blinkered by your perspective as
you're saying we (tinw) are by ours.

Certainly you have a choice. There are lots of businesses for whom
email is a secondary frill, quite definitely not essential, and blowing
off (say) anyone who can't be bothered to follow the syntax for a HELO
argument is an entirely acceptable way to cut down on the drain on
staff time of all that pr0n pouring into the mailbox.

Say you're an auto mechanic, for example. Is your business dealing
with email? No, it's fixing cars! You may well not even _have_ email
service. (Yes, there probably are auto mechanics who have managed to
structure their business in such a way that email is crucial to it.
That it can be done does not mean that it must be done or always will
be done, or even should be done.)

Heck, I'm a computer professional, even; I've made my living working
with computers for over two decades. Is delivery of every last
possible ham aimed my way cruicial to my business? H*ll no! I deal
with those to whom I offer my services (whether they're called
customers, employers, or what, is a detail) face-to-face, almost
always. In some cases, when fairly reliable email is known to exist,
we use it; when not, we use other mechanisms, such as telephones or
in-person meetings.  I've known all along that email is unreliable;
I've been an email postmaster in one way or another for practically all
of that "over two decades", and I haven't seen a time yet when email
delivery hasn't been liable to burp one way or another. Anyone who
thinks email would be perfectly reliable if it just weren't for those
#^&&@!$ $ADJECTIVE $PLURAL_NOUN filtering it is living a delusion.
Even back when we just had "the VAX" (why name machines when there's
only one?) and networking was something aspiring MBAs did at parties,
email did interesting and creative things on us.
