One data point.  We do mail filtering for viruses and occasionally we
receive samples which are almost, but not-quite viruses - that is, the
attachment has been corrupted somehow, so the virus no longer replicates.

Visual examination of the mime attachment typically indicates either 
deletion of a block of data or truncation.

On the average the corruption rate we are seeing is around 1 in 10000.
