Studies have shown that people deleting spam from their inboxes by
hand are only 98-99% correct. That is, they delete a non-negligible
amount of real email.
So for them, losing ~1% of real email is acceptable. This makes me
wonder about the need for a "perfect" anti-spam system.
I'm not suggesting we should design a non-perfect anti-spam system.
We should, as always, strive for perfection. But it has a cost.
Maybe we'll discover that a simple solution stops 99% of spam, but
"interferes with" 1% of real email. If people find that solution
acceptable for themselves, I don't see why we wouldn't deploy it.
The reach for perfection is a noble goal, but not a practical one.
