How does saying "I've got a patent" in any way "put a feather in the cap
of the fight against spam and cheer a victory"?

If anything, it ring-fences off a little bit of the potential solution
space, and ensures the general community cannot use that idea without
paying your licensing tax.  Great.  Way to go with the feathers and the
cheering,
