You'll note they buy it _from_ Amazon and use it _for_ Amazon.

That's fine for Amazon.  But other websites can't take Amazon gift
certificates, unless they have a deal with Amazon (in which case
Amazon does the validation for them).  This is a single point of
failure; but since they're Amazon certificates, it's acceptable for
Amazon to be a single point of failure.
