RE: [AVT] WG last call: draft-ietf-avt-rfc2793bis-08.txt

Arnoud,

Thanks for your positive review of the real time text specification rfc2793bis-08

You are right that the words around mandating two redundant generations as a default look
a bit softer now, as well as the words on the application areas for the two formats now
have a slightly higher risk of overlapping.

You are also right that profiling documents are expected to settle the application habits
for each application of the text packetization format.

Look at the words and place them in relation to the application you most often think
about: The multimedia telephone used in the open Internet. Then you will find that you get
very good guidance to select format and redundancy level.
You will use RTP without any extra protection mechanisms. You will use text/t140 because
this is a call between terminals. The end-to-end network conditions are not known, neither
for the calller, nor for the callee. One of them may for example be in a 3G network
without the other one knowing at call setup. Therefore the default rule applies, that
leads to usage of two levels of redundancy, and block delivery every 300 ms when there is
some text to deliver.

I am sure the implementors will catch the logic. The softening words are for unforeseen
conditions and situations still within scope of real time text conversation.

So, I am glad you are satisfied with the shape of rfc2793bis-08 and want to take it in in
the higher level application documents you are working with.

Regards
Gunnar
