Steve, I think you have this a tad off the mark. It is clear that NSFNET must support IP and OSI packet routing but it is by no means clear that it must do so by using a single routing protocol to achieve this goal. All the commercial routing vendors run parallel routers to support different protocol suites. I am not arguing that is the best way, but we MUST have the ability to run protocol routers in parallel, in any case, so that we can deal with cases which don't admit of a common protocol (I am concerned about the gigabit stuff, for instance). So when you say "dual routers" we hear: one router for two protocols and you reall mean "able to support routing of more than one protocol family." Vint
