When I flew to Ottawa on business last fall, I was warned that I better
make sure I had my passport. When I got to the airport, I was panicked
to find out that I had left my passport in the office. The folks at the
gate hemmed and hawed a bit, but then allowed me to board the plane with
the comment "Well, they *probably* won't turn you back at the border"!
Needless to say, that did not raise my confidence level.

I had a miserable flight to Ottawa in which I had visions of burley border
guards frisking me at gunpoint, and, even worse, having to explain after the
fact why I had to use my per diem for bail rather than a hotel. All fears
turned out to be groundless, fortunately. No one even asked for my passport,
either coming or going.

However, I have every intention of bringing my passport with me anyway.
