General rule of thumb for US travelers--carry receipts for all electronics
valued over $50 with you. US Customs can, at its discretion, charge you
duty unless you can prove that the product was manufactured or acquired in
the US. Generally, duties on electronics such as computers and peripherals
are 300% of the US price on entry into Canada. Letters of Origin declaring
that the product was made in the US reduces the duty to less than 100%--this
is for goods that are being delivered to Canada. Interestingly enough, it
applies to goods being shipped "at Her Majesty's request".

You can stop at US Customs on the way into Canada and get them to give
you a statement that you brought the equipment out of the US. This
makes bringing it back in, much easier.

I forget the details, call them and see how you can speed this
check-in up.
