Protocol Action: Voice Profile for Internet Mail - version 2 to Proposed Standard

The IESG has approved publication of the following Internet-Drafts as
Proposed Standards:

o Voice Profile for Internet Mail - version 2
	<draft-ema-vpim-08.txt>

o Toll Quality Voice - 32 kbit/s ADPCM MIME Sub-type Registration
 	<draft-ema-vpim-32kadpcm-03.txt>

o VPIM Voice Message MIME Sub-type Registration
	<draft-ema-vpim-vmsg-03.txt>

o Content Duration MIME Header Definition
	<draft-ema-vpim-dur-03.txt>

These documents have been reviewed in the IETF but are not the product
of an IETF Working Group. The IESG contact persons are Harald
Alvestrand and Keith Moore.

Technical Summary

 The VPIM specification outlines a way of carrying voice mail
 traffic using SMTP and MIME. It's primarily intended as a
 medium of interchange between dissimilar voice mail systems,
 but ordinary MIME user agents can also receive such messages
 if they support the audio/32kadpcm content-type. Such user
 agents could also send vpim-compatible voice messages with
 slight modifications to generate the multipart/voice-message
 content-type.

 The audio/32kadpcm specification updates the definition of the
 MIME content-type for A-law or mu-law 32kbps audio data
 encoded according to ITU-T recommendation G.726.

 The multipart/voice-message specification defines a MIME
 encapsulation for a voice message (possibly consisting
 of multiple audio parts) along with associated directory
 information in vcard format. It allows, for instance,
 a spoken name and spoken subject, each in its own
 MIME body part, to accompany the "body" of a voice message.

Working Group Summary

 This is not the product of an IETF working group, but is the
 product of the VPIM working group of the Electronic Messaging
 Association. It has nevertheless had extensive review by the
 IETF community to ensure that it is reasonably compatible
 with MIME.

Protocol Quality

 Keith Moore reviewed the spec for IESG.
 There are numerous implementations by voice mail product vendors.
