The IESG has approved the Internet-Draft Transaction Internet Protocol Version 3.0 <draft-lyon-itp-nodes-07.txt> as a Proposed Standard. The IESG also approved publication of Transaction Internet Protocol - Requirements and Supplemental Information <draft-evans-tip-functions-02.txt> as an Informational RFC. These documents are the product of the Transaction Internet Protocol Working Group. The IESG contact persons are Patrik Faltstrom and Keith Moore. Technical Summary In many applications where different nodes cooperate on some work, there is a need to guarantee that the work happens atomically. That is, each node must reach the same conclusion as to whether the work is to be completed, even in the face of failures. This document proposes a simple, easily-implemented protocol for achieving this end. The special feature of this protocol is that it is a two-pipe protocol; the protocol does only the commit protocol, not the work protocol. Working Group Summary There was considerable discussion at the group's formation about the appropriateness of chartering this activity, and whether the protocol was an useful one. There was consensus within the group that the protocol as described was useful for the purposes that the group members desired. Protocol Quality The spec has been reviewed for the IESG by Harald Alvestrand.
