Mailing lists with narrowly defined topics work best. The IETF is the protocol engineering part of "the Internet". Thus, topics related to existing IETF work is progress is appropriate. I add my voice to those calling for restraint in use of the general IETF list for discussion of work not part of the IETF charter, some existing WG activity or occasionally discussions of the lack of adequate refreshments at meetings. To Fred: I'd hate to see anyone banned from the list. But, I also hate having my mailbox full of non-mail addressing topics of no interest on this planet. Maybe the time has come for a moderator. (No, I'm not volunteering.) Enough is enough. Maybe attendance at one IETF meeting should be a requirement to participate in the various IETF lists? Regards, Bill McCauley GeoNet Communications
