It would be interesting to see whether such a system could be made to work 
- the system I've seen that most resembles what you speak of is BOINC, the 
Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing - see 
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boinc> for details.

A separate, but also interesting, question is what parts of the system can 
be usefully standardized.
