I agree with Dean entirely.

It has nothing to do with IPsec or SSL.  Your view of what people do at
home is kind of narrow.  Some people run businesses out of their house,
and some have quite complicated home networks, with wifi for guests and
and other parts they don't want guests to get into.

If you have the space, give it out. (that was the point of a 16 byte IP
address)  The notion that a home user's subnetting makes any difference
to the DFZ is just plain nonsense.  Those sub-blocks are aggregated by
their provider. The home user doesn't need or take a full view, either.From ietf-bounces at ietf.org Tue Aug 28 14:11:33 2007 Return-path: Received: from [127.0.0.1] (helo=stiedprmman1.va.neustar.com) by megatron.ietf.org with esmtp (Exim 4.43) id 1IQ5VR-0004kw-HT; Tue, 28 Aug 2007 14:09:37 -0400 Received: from [10.90.34.44] (helo=chiedprmail1.ietf.org) by megatron.ietf.org with esmtp (Exim 4.43) id 1IPoAn-0003tJ-8J for ietf at ietf.org; Mon, 27 Aug 2007 19:39:09 -0400 Received: from dmzraw5.extranet.tce.com ([157.254.234.142]) by chiedprmail1.ietf.org with esmtp (Exim 4.43) id 1IPoAm-0005R5-DL for ietf at ietf.org; Mon, 27 Aug 2007 19:39:09 -0400 Received: from indyvss3.am.thmulti.com (unknown [157.254.92.62]) by dmzraw5.extranet.tce.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 76A101229; Mon, 27 Aug 2007 23:38:59 +0000 (GMT) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by indyvss3.am.thmulti.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5DB8E1B826D; Tue, 28 Aug 2007 00:38:59 +0100 (BST) X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at thomson.net Received: from indyvss3.am.thmulti.com ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (indyvss3.am.thmulti.com [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with LMTP id FIMOpQS+xIAn; Mon, 27 Aug 2007 23:38:51 +0000 (GMT) Received: from INDYSMAILCS02.am.thmulti.com (indysmailcs02.am.thmulti.com [157.254.96.3]) by indyvss3.am.thmulti.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5FA8F1B829A; Tue, 28 Aug 2007 00:38:51 +0100 (BST) Received: from indysmailbh01.am.thmulti.com ([157.254.96.4]) by INDYSMAILCS02.am.thmulti.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC(6.0.3790.1830); Mon, 27 Aug 2007 19:38:51 -0400 Received: from CAMASMAILBH01.am.thmulti.com ([10.15.1.119]) by indysmailbh01.am.thmulti.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC(6.0.3790.3959); Mon, 27 Aug 2007 19:38:50 -0400 Received: from BRBKSMAIL04.am.thmulti.com ([10.15.28.49]) by CAMASMAILBH01.am.thmulti.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC(6.0.3790.1830); Mon, 27 Aug 2007 16:38:49 -0700 Received: from 10.15.202.56 ([10.15.202.56]) by BRBKSMAIL04.am.thmulti.com ([10.15.28.49]) with Microsoft Exchange Server HTTP-DAV ; Mon, 27 Aug 2007 23:38:49 +0000 User-Agent: Microsoft-Entourage/11.0.0.040405 Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2007 16:38:48 -0700 From: Tommy Perniciaro To: Dean Anderson , Stephen Sprunk Message-ID: In-Reply-To: Mime-version: 1.0 X-OriginalArrivalTime: 27 Aug 2007 23:38:49.0043 (UTC) FILETIME=[6ADD9A30:01C7E903] X-Spam-Score: 1.8 (+) X-Scan-Signature: 93df555cbdbcdae9621e5b95d44b301e X-Mailman-Approved-At: Tue, 28 Aug 2007 14:09:23 -0400 Cc: ppml at arin.net, ietf at ietf.org, address-policy-wg at ripe.net Subject: Re: [ppml] IPv6 addresses really are scarce after all X-BeenThere: ietf at ietf.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: IETF-Discussion List-Unsubscribe: , List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="==============04959532==" Errors-To: ietf-bounces at ietf.org > This message is in MIME format. to the DFZ is just plain nonsense.  Those sub-blocks are aggregated by
their provider. The home user doesn't need or take a full view, either.
They have just their subnets and a default route.

At the other end, the notion that geographic aggregation reduces the DFZ
is likewise nonsense. It just eases the job of the RIR and running
multiple RIRs.  But every block delegated by the RIR will probably make
it into the DFZ, unless it is used for some kind of non-public routing,
in which case perhaps it makes it into some DFZ's, but not others. There
usually isn't any aggregation of blocks delegated by the RIR.
