Subject: Status of ITU work on e164.arpa

Dear Colleagues,

The ENUM working group defined [RFC 3761] a specific Internet
Infrastructure domain (e164.arpa) by which an PSTN number, as
defined in ITU-T Recommendation E.164, can be expressed as a
Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN).

The history and context of operational decisions undertaken by the
Internet Architecture Board on ENUM are well documented in
RFC 3245[1].

Several National Regulatory Authorities have approved the use of the
e164.arpa domain for various trial and now commercial purposes
in accordance with procedures arrived at between the IAB and ITU (see
[2] and the revised procedures described in [3])

In order to facilitate ongoing cooperation in this work, the IAB would
appreciate an update on the status of the ITU work on e164.arpa, its
associated Recommendation (draft) E.A-ENUM and its planned finalization
of the ENUM Recommendation such that the temporary nature of the
commercial delegations can be resolved. We would sincerely hope that
a permanent determination from the ITU on e164.arpa as the ENUM domain
be completed as soon as possible.

For the IAB,

   Olaf Kolkman, Chair
