Of course any string might be used, but the probability seems low.  An administrator could also prohibit it (sure there could be a display glitches for EAI clients).  If we were concerned about xn--, it could be q.-_. or something instead.  (Sure, that could also be in an address, but this is stretching it a bit).  I don't think this need block us.  The risk of breaking a very few addresses is small compared to the functionality that is gained.

Again: I'm only (re)proposing this as a last-resort fallback, not to replace a human friendly alias.
