The IMP proposals we have so far are echo protocols.  A break in the
forward path will mean there is no reply so in this case the same
problem does exist for a break in the forward path.

No reply may not be such a bad thing since that is what the network is
doing to data packets sent on that path.

Are you proposing a `break detection' functionality that notices that
there is a break and then generates a reply from the point of the
break?
