Shouldn't the data be set to the value that was the default of the particular traceroute implementation for that parameter? 

If the parameter is there, yes, I'd prefer that (rather than having to
look up what it is for this implementation).  So:

 = Default value is "impossible number" for a record.
 = If user sets it, that value
 = If not, whatever the default is for the implementation
