OK, it definitely seems reasonable to me for people to suggest changes
to fix obvious bugs with basically one solution to you privately and
for you to go forward like you've done here. Some of these additional
changes depend on changes in your first message I'm still reviewing.
However, unless we have some concerns about dependent changes, all of
these look fine.

Not really; it does a much better job of explaining what changes were
made rather than why. The level of detail you provided in your second
message is about right for changes based on private comments.
