Well, the discussion as I read it lead to John saying (about the registry
document):

I think analogous editorial tweaks in the two places where the format
is mentioned in the initial registry draft are less drastic than the
changes needed if we eliminated the reference entirely.  As I read
your posts on the topic, it seemed you were arguing that giving
credit to the originators of the format that inspired this one
was the right thing to do.
