So, if we're entertaining ABNF changes, what about this? langtag = language ["-" script ["-" scriptvar] ... scriptvar = 4alpha where scriptvar subtags are defined per a registration and *not* interpreted in terms of ISO 15924. That's a limited change in syntax and gives 456,976 possible script-variant subtags (should be more than plenty for transcriptions and transliterations).
