IIRC, at one point Shawn said something along the lines that, if we're going to tell people to use 'zh' to mean Mandarin, then effectively we're determining that 'zh' *does* and always will mean Mandarin, so we might as well deprecate 'cmn' to avoid confusion and duplication. I didn't take that as him recommending that we do this; only that that was the logical implication of what he was hearing from others.
