The more significant distinction is that ancient languages have a body of literature -- which is why we know about them, whereas extinct language likely do not have a body of literature -- we know about them because they died out recently enough for someone to document their existence, but because not enough literature (if any) had developed to sustain vitality the language died as younger generations moved to more developed languages.
