Dear NSISers,
Thanks to all who posted on this thread. There were some very creative
suggestions.
Sung-Hyuk: SHINSIS
Takako: SINGOP
John Loughney: NSIS (Other meanings for NSIS)
I am fine with any of these if there is consensus around any of them.

I know this is a fun debate to have. I'd just like to add that deviating
from the acronym custom will only lead to people inventing expansions of
a term.
Anyone invented expansions of Diameter yet? :-) But I understand where you are coming
from, Henning.
Also Takako noted, I am not a native Japanese speaker, and so the proposal of SHINGOU
is not one that Japanese person would make. I am glad that her colleagues laughed when
they heard the name:. That was the intended outcome! But my suggestion was not merely
a Japanese-only joke. I am sure that the name SHINGOU will confuse Japanese and
non-Japanese alike. The idea is to avoid bad acronyms, find something that is easy
for all to say, and have something that sounds attractive, and something that does
not cause trademark lawsuits.
In case you are wondering why I find the name "GIMPS" somewhat unattractive, please
see the definitions below from the site http://www.m-w.com:
Main Entry: (3) gimp
Function: noun
Etymology: origin unknown
1 : CRIPPLE
2 : LIMP <walks with a gimp -- Damon Runyon>
- gimpy /'gim-pE/ adjective
Main Entry: (4) gimp
Function: intransitive verb
: LIMP, HOBBLE <gimping up the stairs>
I don't think we want to give the impression that the protocol is "crippled", is
"limp","limps" or is "hobbling" (For non-native english speakers, I maintain that
these are negative impressions).
Also, there is a near-collision with a very famous piece of image manipulation
software called "The GIMP" See: http://www.gimp.org/
So I think we still need something better than GIMPS.
I will propose another alternative same to GIMPS for the NTLP:
SIX (Signalling Internet eXpressions)
Therefore: SIX-QoS, SIX-NATFW
(one problem: SIX version 1, SIX version 2, SIX version 6!)
What do you say? :-)
Cyrus
