There is a useful and accepted definition in ITU-T Recommendations, e.g. I.555 for Service Interworking. Please take a look at it.

Before I attempt to define service interworking, I
think it would be valuable for you to explain the
different purposes these encapsulations have. Your
answer **may** dramatically lower the size of the
thread and also help me better define service
interworking.
