MPLS" is not possible at the current time as there
is such thing (at least not in the IETF) as an
"MPLS service". <<
MS=> Well perhaps the term is a bad one - that should
not be enough to disqualify the idea, but the point
you make below is worth discussing.
[ERIC] And hopefully things will stay that way.
MS=> Somehow I doubt it ;-)

to having a sort of "generic service" to/from
which all other services could be mapped. However,if
FR/ATM interworking on the one hand and ARP
mediation on the other hand cover 99% of the space,
there doesn't really seem to be much need for this
generic service. <<
MS=> Well there is this emerging thing called
Ethernet; and there was Jack's note about a
requirement for ATM CES-TDM service interworking. But
to your point, FR/ATM/IP cover I would say at least
90% of the cases today (not including private line
TDM); so a lot can be achieved with the approach of
doing IWF either side of the PW, as a practical matter
today. Probably the trickier discussion is what makes
sense for tomorrow, and what makes sense for people
that want to move towards one integrated network from
an OAM, management plane, and control plane
perspective; and what volume will be achieved with
these new services.
