BTW, the idea that a reader could be told to function autonomously, delivering its data directly to a set of consumers without dependence on a third-party controller is not even touched upon by ALE, since ALE is an interface between higher level applications and middleware. It is true that this interface may be available (at some point in the future) on a smart reader, but I think that this same type of autonomous operation would also be valuable for basic readers that only implement the lower-level reader control protocol (the RP level in the EPC Global architecture).
