[rohc] Liaison towards 3GPP
Hello all,
At the ROHC-meeting in Adelaide I was proposed as a Liaison person from
the ROHC wg towards 3GPP. There was no objections against this then, and
I have not yet recieved any indications that there are any objection
against this. I you have any objection against this, please speak now.
3GPP is currently standardizing what they call all-IP systems. The
buzzword "IP all the way" is commonly used to describe this kind of
system. That basically means that IP-based services will carried all the
way to the mobile terminal also for the voice service. Since bandwidth
is scarse in cellular system, standards for robust header compression
algorithms are essential to achieve spectrum efficiency. The first
release (release 2000) of standards for this kind of system will be
completed by the end of this year. Hence, it is important that 3GPP as
soon as possible is aware of what we do in the ROHC wg and that they can
find trust in us to standardize a robust header compression algorithm
accordng to our charter. It is also important that their expertise in
some way may be taken into account when standardising the ROHC scheme.
3GPP should
thus be given information about ROHC as soon as possible.
With that said, I would like to inform that I plan to prepare and submit
an input to the coming 3GPP meeting. Unfortanetly it starts already the
following week. Hence, I have to prepare this input by tomorrow, friday
7/4. The input will however be very general and basically inform that
the ROHC wg has been officially formed, give links to the charter, the
requirements draft and request for comments on the requirements.
Any opinions on this?
Cheers,
Krister Svanbro
