Actually, it MUST be preset to a defined value (like all 1's), or we won't
interoperate.
(See RFC 2119 for the usage of keywords like SHOULD and MUST.)
I would recommend to use RFC2119 keywords sparingly, though, so the spec
should just say how the CRC works.

I think further discussion is needed about the statement:
"This makes it possible to recalculate the checksums after the
decompression."
