I agree that it's not the WG's job to try and figure out the patent status.
It is up to us to consider what the effect of the IPRs on deployment will be
though, and the effect for any commercial user is that they'll run screaming.
Just because someone says they're only using it in free software won't help
either, look at what happened with GIF once Unisys started trying to enforce
their patent on LZW.
