It is doubtful whether either can claim copyright on such simple
definitions; but to avoid doubt we could use:
"spouse" means that the related individual is married to the
individual this vCard represents, or that they consider
themselves to have an equivalent relationship.
I would avoid the words "husband and wife", since same-sex couples may
self-define as being made up of two of either one of those.
