RE: [XCON] Whisper vs. Sidebar

Lets list some requirements. I'm going to use audio, video and IM as media:

Sidebar:

- MUST allow user to create a sidebar
- MUST allow user to join a sidebar
- MUST allow user to receive media from main conference while in a sidebar
     - MUST allow user to hear main conference audio while in sidebar
     - MUST allow user to receive IMs sent to main conference while in sidebar
     - MUST allow user to see main conference video while in sidebar
- MUST allow user to distinguish between main conference media and sidebar media
     - MUST allow user to distinguish between audio sent to main conference from that sent to a sidebar (hear main conference audio at lower volume)
     - MUST allow user to distinguish between IMs sent to main conference from those sent to a sidebar (different window or colour)
     - MUST allow user to distinguish between Video sent to main conference from that sent to a sidebar
- MUST NOT allow sidebar media to be distributed to non-sidebar participants
- MUST allow a creator of a sidebar to decide if the sidebar existence is private or public information
- MUST allow a creator of a sidebar to decide whether anyone can join or only by invitation
- MUST allow a non-main conference participant to join in a sidebar
- (controversial) A sidebar creator MUST be able to request a sidebar not to be recorded (if recording is in progress)



Whisper:

- MUST allow user to send a whisper message
     - MUST allow user to send a talk burst to one or more users
     - MUST allow user to send an IM to one or more users
     - MUST allow user to send a video burst to one or more users
- MUST allow user to receive media from main conference while sending/receiving a whisper
     - MUST allow user to hear main conference audio while sending/receiving a whisper talk burst
     - MUST allow user to receive IMs sent to main conference while sending/receiving a whisper IM
     - MUST allow user to see main conference video while sending/receiving a whisper video burst
- MUST allow user to distinguish between main conference media and whisper media
     - MUST allow user to distinguish between audio sent to main conference from that sent as a whisper talk burst
     - MUST allow user to distinguish between IMs sent to main conference from those sent as a whisper IM
     - MUST allow user to distinguish between Video sent to main conference from that sent as a whisper video burst
- MUST NOT allow whisper to be distributed to non-whisper recipients as dictated by the whisper creator
- MUST allow a creator of a whisper to decide if the whisper existence is private or public information
- A whisper MUST not create a forum where users can join
- MUST NOT allow the creator of a conference to enable/disable whispers
- (controversial) A whisper creator MUST be able to request a whisper not to be recorded (if recording is in progress)


This is not a full list, but as you can see, there are some similarities in the requirements, but there are definitely some differences.
