Introduction 89 This document defines one new RTP Control Protocol (RTCP) Source 90 Description (SDES) [RFC3550] item, and one new Extended Report (XR) 91 Report Block carrying parameters that identify and describe a 92 measurement period, to which one or more other RTCP XR Report Blocks 93 may refer. 95 The SDES item provides a field for an application specific auxiliary 96 identifier. This identifier may be used to correlate data in XR 97 Blocks within an RTP session with data from a non-RTP session. 99 A RTCP Measurement Identity SDES packet may be associated with a set 100 of RTCP XR metrics blocks which share the same application specific 101 measurement identifier. 103 The XR Report Block does not contain any measurement results 104 (metrics). Instead, it provides information relevant to a 105 measurement reported in one or more other block types, including: 107 o the sequence number of the first packet of the RTP session, 109 o the extended sequence numbers of the first packet of the current 110 measurement interval, and the last packet included in the 111 measurement, 113 o the duration of the most recent measurement interval and 115 o the duration of the interval applicable to cumulative measurements 116 (which may be the duration of the RTP session to date). 118 The method for calculation of the extended RTP sequence number is 119 provide in Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) [RFC3550]. 121 The RTCP XR Report Block containing the measurement information is 122 intended to provide a single copy of the information necessary to 123 relate measurement data in the RTCP XR blocks to the stream, and 124 measurement period, to which they refer. Commonly, multiple other 125 small metric blocks contain measurement data for the same stream and 126 period, and it would be a large overhead if all of these metric 127 blocks carried duplicated data for measurement identification. 129 The RTCP XR Report Block may be associated with a set of RTCP XR 130 metrics blocks which share the same information relevant to a 131 reported measurement. There may be several such sets in an RTCP 132 packet, in which each set share the same information relevant to a 133 reported measurement. There may also be RTCP XR blocks in the packet 134 which are not associated with a Measurement Information block, for 135 example blocks which were defined before the Measurement Identity and 136 information mechanism was introduced by this document. 138 1.1. RTCP and RTCP XR Reports 140 The use of RTCP for reporting is defined in [RFC3550]. [RFC3611] 141 defines an extensible structure for reporting using an RTCP Extended 142 Report (XR). This document defines a new Extended Report block. The 143 use of Extended Report blocks is defined by [RFC3611]. 145 1.2. Performance Metrics Framework 147 The Performance Metrics Framework [RFC6390] provides guidance on the 148 definition and specification of performance metrics. The RTP 149 Monitoring Architectures[MONARCH] provides guideline for reporting 150 block format using RTCP XR. The SDES item and XR Block described in 151 this document are in accordance with [RFC6390] and [MONARCH]. 153 1.3. Applicability 155 The RTCP SDES item and the RTCP XR block defined in this document 156 provides information relevant to the measurements for members of a 157 family of RTCP XR metrics blocks which are designed to use it. To 158 use the mechanism defined here, the RTCP XR block containing 159 measurement information is not required to be in the same RTCP packet 160 as the SDES item containing measurement identity. 162 2. Terminology 164 2.1. Standards Language 166 The key words "MUST", "MUST NOT", "REQUIRED", "SHALL", "SHALL NOT", 167 "SHOULD", "SHOULD NOT", "RECOMMENDED", "MAY", and "OPTIONAL" in this 168 document are to be interpreted as described in RFC 2119 [RFC2119]. 170 3. Measurement Identity SDES Item 172 This section defines the format of the Measurement Identity SDES 173 item. The SDES item is carried in the RTCP SDES packet. The packet 174 format for the RTCP SDES is defined in Section 6.5 of [RFC3550]. 175 Each SDES packet is composed of a header with fixed-length fields for 176 version, source count, packet type (PT), and length, followed by zero 177 of more SDES items. In the SDES packet, the PT field is set to SDES 178 (202). 180 3.1. Definition of Fields in Measurement Information Report Block 226 Block type (BT): 8 bits 228 A Measurement Information Report Block is identified by the 229 constant NMI. 231 [Note to RFC Editor: please replace NMI with the IANA provided 232 RTCP XR block type for this block.] 234 Reserved.: 8 bits 236 These bits are reserved. They MUST be set to zero by senders and 237 ignored by receivers. 239 Block Length: 16 bits 241 The length of this report block in 32-bit words minus one. For 242 the Measurement Information block, the block length is equal to 7. 244 SSRC of source: 32 bits 246 As defined in Section 4.1 of [RFC3611]. 248 Reserved: 16 bits 250 These bits are reserved. They MUST be set to zero by senders and 251 ignored by receivers. 253 First sequence number: 16 bits 255 The RTP sequence number of the first received RTP packet of the 256 session, used to determine the number of packets contributing to 257 cumulative measurements. 259 Extended first sequence number of interval: 32 bits 261 The extended RTP sequence number of the first received RTP packet 262 of the current measurement interval. The extended sequence number 263 is expressed as the low 16 bits value containing the sequence 264 number received in an RTP data packet and the most significant 16 265 bits value containing the corresponding count of sequence number 266 cycles. For additional information on extended sequence numbers 267 see "extended highest sequence number received" definition in RFC 268 3550 section 6.4.1 and RFC 3550 Appendix A.1. 270 Extended last sequence number: 32 bits 272 The extended RTP sequence number of the last received RTP packet 273 which contributed to this measurement. The extended sequence 274 number is expressed as the low 16 bits value containing the 275 sequence number received in an RTP data packet and the most 276 significant 16 bits value containing the corresponding count of 277 sequence number cycles. For additional information on extended 278 sequence numbers see "extended highest sequence number received" 279 definition in RFC 3550 section 6.4.1 and RFC 3550 Appendix A.1. 281 Measurement Duration (Interval): 32 bits 283 The duration, expressed in units of 1/65536 seconds, of the 284 reporting interval applicable to Interval reports which use this 285 Measurement Information block . The value of this field can be 286 calculated by the receiver of the RTP media stream, for example, 287 based on received RTP media packets or using RTCP method described 288 in [RFC3550]. 290 Measurement Duration (Cumulative): 64 bits 292 The duration of the reporting interval applicable to Cumulative 293 reports which use this Measurement Information block. The value 294 of this field is represented using a 64-bit NTP-format timestamp 295 as defined in [RFC5905], which is 64-bit unsigned fixed-point 296 number with the integer part in the first 32 bits and the 297 fractional part in the last 32 bits. It can be calculated by the 298 receiver of the RTP media stream, for example, based on received 299 RTP media packets or using RTCP method described in [RFC3550]. 301 5. IANA Considerations 303 New SDES types for RTCP SDES are subject to IANA registration. For 304 general guidelines on IANA considerations for RTCP SDES, refer to 305 [RFC3550]. 307 5.1.
