<t>This document defines custody transfer for Bundle Protocol Version 7. A
Custody Transfer Extension Block is defined to request custody transfer
of a bundle, and a Compressed Custody Signal in the form of an
administrative record is used to report acceptance or rejection for
multiple bundles.</t>

<section anchor="intro">
      <name>Introduction</name>
      <t>BPv7, as defined in <xref target="RFC9171"/>, does not include the custody-transfer
mechanism defined for BPv6. Building on the corresponding CCSDS
experimental specification <xref target="CCSDS-734.6-O-1"/>, this document defines a
BPv7 custody-transfer extension in which a Custody Transfer Extension
Block (CTEB) requests transfer of retransmission responsibility and a
Compressed Custody Signal (CCS) reports acceptance or rejection for
multiple bundles.</t>
      <t>This document depends on the sequence-identification framework in
<xref target="I-D.flentge-dtn-bundle-sequence-identification"/>.</t>
    </section>
    <section anchor="conventions">
      <name>Conventions and Terminology</name>
      <t>The key words "MUST", "MUST NOT", "REQUIRED", "SHALL", "SHALL
NOT", "SHOULD", "SHOULD NOT", "RECOMMENDED", "NOT RECOMMENDED",
"MAY", and "OPTIONAL" in this document are to be interpreted as
described in BCP 14 <xref target="RFC2119"/> <xref target="RFC8174"/> when, and only when, they
appear in all capitals, as shown here.
      </t>
      <t>Block Source Administrative Endpoint ID (AEID) : An endpoint ID of the
administrative element of the BP agent that assigns a Bundle Sequence
Number and inserts the corresponding Custody Transfer Extension Block.</t>
      <t>Compressed Custody Signal (CCS): An administrative record sent to the
current custodian of a bundle to indicate acceptance or rejection of
custody.</t>
      <t>Current Custodian: A node retaining a bundle after requesting onward
custody.</t>
      <t>Prospective Custodian: A node deciding whether to accept custody.</t>
      <t>Custody Transfer (CT): Transfer of responsibility for retaining and
reliable transmission of a bundle from one BP node to another. Typically
this is achieved through keeping a copy of the bundle and
re-transmitting the bundle in case no custody acceptance signal is
received. It can also be achieved if the use of reliable convergence
layers can be guaranteed to the next custodian of destination node.
Still, custody transfer may fail and it does not guarantee end-to-end
reliability. It is rather an efficiency mechanism as it allows
re-transmission from an intermediate node and may be used together with
end-to-end reliability mechanisms, such as delivery reporting, where
required.</t>
      <t>Custody Transfer Extension Block (CTEB): A BPv7 extension block which
requests forwarding bundle nodes to take custody of a bundle.</t>
    </section>
    <section anchor="applicability">
      <name>Applicability Statement</name>
      <t>This mechanism is intended primarily for relatively small, well-managed
DTNs in which participants, routing expectations, storage policies, and
operational responsibilities are known. It does not prescribe the use of
custody timers or solve re-forwarding time estimation for large-scale
open DTNs. Nodes can forward a CTEB without implementing this
specification according to BPv7 extension-block processing, but gaps in
support can reduce efficiency or prevent transfer of custody.</t>

    <section anchor="overview">
      <name>Protocol Overview</name>
      <t>A node requests custody by inserting a CTEB. A downstream node accepts
or rejects custody and reports the disposition in a CCS addressed to the
block source AEID. An accepting custodian retains the bundle and, unless
reliable delivery to the destination is otherwise assured, requests
custody from a downstream node. The current custodian releases its
custody state only after an accepting CCS or bundle expiration.</t>

reasonable likelihood that it can be forwarded to a next custodian
successfully, based on a bundle lifetime, upcoming contacts, past
experiences, etc. At a minimum, the node must be capable of storing the

            <abstract>
              <t>This document describes a simple process that allows authors of Internet-Drafts to record the status of known implementations by including an Implementation Status section. This will allow reviewers and working groups to assign due consideration to documents that have the benefit of running code, which may serve as evidence of valuable experimentation and feedback that have made the implemented protocols more mature.</t>
              <t>This process is not mandatory. Authors of Internet-Drafts are encouraged to consider using the process for their documents, and working groups are invited to think about applying the process to all of their protocol specifications. This document obsoletes RFC 6982, advancing it to a Best Current Practice.</t>
