BOFs are just one of a number of ways of bringing ideas for new work to the attention of the IETF community. While BOFs are usually held at IETF meetings, requests to hold a BOF must be made significantly in advance of the meeting. Preliminary proposals for Birds-of-a-Feather (BOF) sessions for the upcoming IETF 118 Prague meeting are due by 8 September 2023.

If a proposal needs further work, the Internet Engineering Steering Group (IESG) and Internet Architecture Board (IAB) will work with BOF proponents on revisions, but the initial proposal needs to be received by 8 September 2023.

Further details about BOFs, and instructions for submitting proposals via the IETF Datatracker are available.

RFC 5434, "Considerations for Having a Successful Birds-of-a-Feather Session" has additional important information.

BOFs are just one of a number of ways of bringing new work into the IETF. If you are considering a BOF request but you are unsure whether to submit it, please ask the IESG now by sending an email to, or speak to an individual Area Director about your idea.
