Abstract:

The first step of Transaction SIGnature (TSIG) (RFC 284= 5) is to

This draft is a work item of the Internet Area Working Group Working Group= of the IETF. Title : Updated Specification of the IPv4 ID Field Author(s) : Joe Touch Filename : draft-ietf-intarea-ipv4-id-update-06.txt Pages : 18 Date : 2012-10-09 Abstract: The IPv4 Identification (ID) field enables fragmentation and reassembly, and as currently specified is required to be unique within the maximum lifetime for all datagrams with a given source/destination/protocol tuple. If enforced, this uniqueness requirement would limit all connections to 6.4 Mbps. Because individual connections commonly exceed this speed, it is clear that existing systems violate the current specification. This document updates the specification of the IPv4 ID field in RFC791, RFC1122, and RFC2003 to more closely reflect current practice and to more closely match IPv6 so that the field's value is defined only when a datagram is actually fragmented. It also discusses the impact of these changes on how datagrams are used. The IETF datatracker status page for this draft is: https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-intarea-ipv4-id-update There's also a htmlized version available at: http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-intarea-ipv4-id-update-06 A diff from the previous version is available at: http://www.ietf.org/rfcdiff?url2=3Ddraft-ietf-intarea-ipv4-id-update-06 Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP at: ftp://ftp.ietf.org/internet-drafts/ From touch@isi.edu Tue Oct 9 13:32:17 2012 Return-Path: X-Original-To: int-area@ietfa.amsl.com Delivered-To: int-area@ietfa.amsl.com Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by ietfa.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 65B5821F85AE; Tue, 9 Oct 2012 13:32:17 -0700 (PDT) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at amsl.com X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -103.599 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-103.599 tagged_above=-999 required=5 tests=[AWL=-1.000, BAYES_00=-2.599, USER_IN_WHITELIST=-100] Received: from mail.ietf.org ([64.170.98.30]) by localhost (ietfa.amsl.com [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id MJs48DL2I5ZX; Tue, 9 Oct 2012 13:32:16 -0700 (PDT) Received: from vapor.isi.edu (vapor.isi.edu [128.9.64.64]) by ietfa.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id CC69D21F8587; Tue, 9 Oct 2012 13:32:16 -0700 (PDT) Received: from [128.9.160.166] (abc.isi.edu [128.9.160.166]) (authenticated bits=0) by vapor.isi.edu (8.13.8/8.13.8) with ESMTP id q99KVlR3019210 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NOT); Tue, 9 Oct 2012 13:31:47 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: <507489B3.4020808@isi.edu> Date: Tue, 09 Oct 2012 13:31:47 -0700 From: Joe Touch User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:15.0) Gecko/20120907 Thunderbird/15.0.1 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: internet-drafts@ietf.org References: <20121009202107.6066.20409.idtracker@ietfa.amsl.com> In-Reply-To: <20121009202107.6066.20409.idtracker@ietfa.amsl.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-ISI-4-43-8-MailScanner: Found to be clean X-MailScanner-From: touch@isi.edu Cc: int-area@ietf.org, i-d-announce@ietf.org Subject: Re: [Int-area] I-D Action: draft-ietf-intarea-ipv4-id-update-06.txt X-BeenThere: int-area@ietf.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.12 Precedence: list List-Id: IETF Internet Area Mailing List List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 09 Oct 2012 20:32:17 -0000 Hi, all, This version includes changes to address feedback by the IESG, which focus on providing context on the impact of this change on existing use and some clarifications. Abstract: This document describes the Connectivity Provisioning Profile (CPP) and proposes a CPP Template to capture IP connectivity requirements to be met in the context of delivery of services (e.g. Voice over IP or IP TV) which are to be plugged upon an IP/MPLS infrastructure. The CPP defines the set of IP transfer parameters to be supported by the underlying IP/MPLS transport network together with a reachability scope and bandwidth/capacity needs. Appropriate performance metrics such as one-way delay, one-way delay variation are used to characterize an IP transfer service. Both global and restricted reachability scopes can be captured in the CPP. Having the generic CPP template allows for (1) automating the process of service negotiation and activation, thus accelerating service provisioning, (2) setting the (traffic) objectives of Traffic Engineering functions and service management functions and (3) enriching service and network management systems with 'decision- making' capabilities based on negotiated/offered CPPs. https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-boucadair-connectivity-provisioning-= profile http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-boucadair-connectivity-provisioning-profil= e-02 Comments are welcome. Can you please let me know if you need any slides updating the status of the IPv4 ID doc? I already sent a note to the list indicating the changes in the last version, and am waiting for the IESG to revisit the status. Thanks, Joe
