However, when we decorate "char" and other elements with a list of references in a "ref" attribute we rely on space separation for listing multiple values inside a single "ref" attribute (section 4.4.1). However that is in conflict with the "ref" which consists of a space separated list of "id" values. A minimal fix would be to make "id" a NMTOKEN and ref NMTOKENS However, we want these id's to be short; in fact we recommend them to be numeric values. There is some use case for alphabetic abbreviations, so after discussion on the list the following pattern could be used to restrict the "id" value. ([-_.:A-Z\d])+ that is allow the uppercase letters A-Z and a few punctuation marks in case people need to support hierarchical reference ids. The "type" attribute on a variant is specified as "text" - that doesn't work with the way action triggers need a space-separated list. So this must be changed to something like xsd:NMTOKEN that's reasonably broad but doesn't allow spaces, and the any-variant, all-variants and only-variants attributes on elements then become NMTOKENS. That allows reasonable freedom in specifying variant types, but makes sure that those variant-trigger attributes can be the space-separated lists the spec calls for. Some of the default dispositions have the same values as default variant types, so making both variant type and disposition the same under the schema seems the right thing. In a number of cases that's incorrect, in others it just seems needlessly permissive.

As a the majority of these are clearcut bugs, I've entered this in the tracker.

The "type" attribute on a variant is specified as "text" - that doesn't work with the way action triggers need a space-separated list. So this must be changed to something like xsd:NMTOKEN that's reasonably broad but doesn't allow spaces, and the any-variant, all-variants and only-variants attributes on <action> elements then become NMTOKENS. That allows reasonable freedom in specifying variant types, but makes sure that those variant-trigger attributes can be the space-separated lists the spec calls for.

The "match" and "not-match" attributes are specified in the schema as "text". That is incorrect, these need to be "rule-ref", because they reference rules.

The "disp" attribute on <action> could reamain "text", but there seems little value in being so open in just that instance, therefore, I suggest to use xsd:NMTOKEN here as well. Some of the default dispositions have the same values as default variant types, so making both variant type and disposition the same under the schema seems the right thing.

After making these changes, the only non-comment attributes left as text are

(1) the "property" attribute for a class declaration, here xsd:NMTOKEN is general enough to capture the Unicode oriented "property_name:property_value" naming scheme

(2) the "id" attribute to the <lgr> element which is a feature that doesn't exist in the specification and, I think, should be removed.

(3) the "type" attribute on <description>. Because it contains a mediatype with a slash in it, using NMTOKEN won't work. I guess we could leave that as "text", unless someone has a better idea.

In a number of cases that's incorrect, in others it just seems needlessly permissive. The "match" and "not-match" attributes are specified in the schema as "text". That is incorrect, these need to be "rule-ref", because they reference rules. The "disp" attribute on could reamain "text", but there seems little value in being so open in just that instance, therefore, I suggest to use xsd:NMTOKEN here as well. Some of the default dispositions have the same values as default variant types, so making both variant type and disposition the same under the schema seems the right thing. After making these changes, the only non-comment attributes left as text are (1) the "property" attribute for a class declaration, here xsd:NMTOKEN is general enough to capture the Unicode oriented "property_name:property_value" naming scheme (2) the "id" attribute to the element which is a feature that doesn't exist in the specification and, I think, should be removed. (3) the "type" attribute on . Because it contains a mediatype with a slash in it, using NMTOKEN won't work. I guess we could leave that as "text", unless someone has a better idea. -- -------------------------+------------------------------------------------- Reporter: | Owner: draft-ietf-lager- asmusf@ix.netcom.com | specification@tools.ietf.org Type: defect | Status: new Priority: major | Milestone: Component: | Version: specification | Keywords: Severity: - | -------------------------+------------------------------------------------- Ticket URL: lager From nobody Sun Dec 6 03:08:40 2015 Return-Path: X-Original-To: lager@ietfa.amsl.com Delivered-To: lager@ietfa.amsl.com Received: from localhost (ietfa.amsl.com [127.0.0.1]) by ietfa.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5504D1ACE4F for ; Sun, 6 Dec 2015 03:08:39 -0800 (PST) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at amsl.com X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -1.91 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-1.91 tagged_above=-999 required=5 tests=[BAYES_00=-1.9, T_RP_MATCHES_RCVD=-0.01] autolearn=unavailable Received: from mail.ietf.org ([4.31.198.44]) by localhost (ietfa.amsl.com [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id d6HBMjy1PPBb for ; Sun, 6 Dec 2015 03:08:38 -0800 (PST) Received: from zinfandel.tools.ietf.org (zinfandel.tools.ietf.org [IPv6:2001:1890:123a::1:2a]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 (128/128 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by ietfa.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 400261ACE4B for ; Sun, 6 Dec 2015 03:08:38 -0800 (PST) Received: from localhost ([::1]:35543 helo=zinfandel.tools.ietf.org) by zinfandel.tools.ietf.org with esmtp (Exim 4.82_1-5b7a7c0-XX) (envelope-from ) id 1a5XBF-0003Dz-CJ; Sun, 06 Dec 2015 03:08:37 -0800 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit From: "lager issue tracker" X-Trac-Version: 0.12.5 Precedence: bulk Auto-Submitted: auto-generated X-Mailer: Trac 0.12.5, by Edgewall Software To: draft-ietf-lager-specification@tools.ietf.org, asmusf@ix.netcom.com X-Trac-Project: lager Date: Sun, 06 Dec 2015 11:08:37 -0000 X-URL: https://tools.ietf.org/lager/ X-Trac-Ticket-URL: https://trac.tools.ietf.org/wg/lager/trac/ticket/28#comment:1 Message-ID: <076.e2373c0a91f59411106533589c472cba@tools.ietf.org> References: <061.5b58187139774878467c2b797d30d9d0@tools.ietf.org> X-Trac-Ticket-ID: 28 In-Reply-To: <061.5b58187139774878467c2b797d30d9d0@tools.ietf.org> X-SA-Exim-Connect-IP: ::1 X-SA-Exim-Rcpt-To: draft-ietf-lager-specification@tools.ietf.org, asmusf@ix.netcom.com, lager@ietf.org X-SA-Exim-Mail-From: trac+lager@tools.ietf.org X-SA-Exim-Scanned: No (on zinfandel.tools.ietf.org); SAEximRunCond expanded to false Resent-To: draft-ietf-lager-specification@ietf.org Resent-Message-Id: <20151206110838.400261ACE4B@ietfa.amsl.com> Resent-Date: Sun, 6 Dec 2015 03:08:38 -0800 (PST) Resent-From: trac+lager@tools.ietf.org Archived-At: Cc: lager@ietf.org Subject: Re: [Lager] [lager] #28 (specification): Schema use of "text" incorrect or too permissive X-BeenThere: lager@ietf.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.15 List-Id: Label Generation Rules List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 06 Dec 2015 11:08:39 -0000 #28: Schema use of "text" incorrect or too permissive Comment (by asmusf@ix.netcom.com): There is an additional restriction on variant types, they cannot start with a "_". This draft is a work item of the Label Generation Rules Working Group of the IETF. Title : Representing Label Generation Rulesets using XML Authors : Kim Davies Asmus Freytag Filename : draft-ietf-lager-specification-05.txt Pages : 64 Date : 2015-12-09 Abstract: This document describes a method of representing rules for validating identifier labels and alternate representations of those labels using Extensible Markup Language (XML). These policies, known as "Label Generation Rulesets" (LGRs), are used for the implementation of Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs), for example. The rulesets are used to implement and share that aspect of policy defining which labels and specific Unicode code points are permitted for registrations, which alternative code points are considered variants, and what actions may be performed on labels containing those variants. All,

I've finished my review of the schema. I've pushed a version onto t= he gitHub with all proposed
changes shown. A matching update to the spec XML document, with any languag= e changes (mostly
clarifying, but also the more restricted pattern for "ref" attrib= utes) is also pushed up.

The XML passes the xml2rc tool, the RNC file I have no handy tool to valida= te. Would appreciate if
someone could load it and check that it's not broken.
I've check the RNC file with trang [1], and made some minor corrections= to have it validated by the
tool. Sent a pull request for it.

I looked it over and merged.

I fixed a = nesting error and created a pull request:=C2=A0https://github.com/kjd/lgr-specification/pu= ll/2

This draft is a work item of the Label Generation Rules Working Group of the IETF. Title : Representing Label Generation Rulesets using XML Authors : Kim Davies Asmus Freytag Filename : draft-ietf-lager-specification-06.txt Pages : 73 Date : 2015-12-11 Abstract: This document describes a method of representing rules for validating identifier labels and alternate representations of those labels using Extensible Markup Language (XML). In particular, we considered whether we should allow Unicode's mechanism of supporting any mixture of short and long alias, with or without optional "_" inserted. What decided us against that is that it allows the same property to be referred to in multiple ways that cannot be reconciled without access to the full description of the Unicode character database. (There's also the issue that Unicode can, at any time, define new "aliases" for existing properties and values, something that lacks the requisite stability for this kind of context). Unicode allows, for general use, both a short and a long alias for property name as well as property value. (Additional aliases may exist or be added over time). Any alias is case insensitive, but also "_" are allowed anywhere (as are spaces, when the alias isn't used as an identifier, for example, in the text of a specification). This would make the following properties identical: sc:Common, sc:Zyyy, Script:Commmon, Script:Zyyy gc:Mn, gc:Nonspacing_Mark, gc:Non_spacing_Mark, GeneralCategory:Mn, Gen_eralCAT_egory:M_n and so on. When it comes to designing an XML schema, we felt that this freedom of expression has limited benefits but definite costs in complexity and risk. We noted, that when if came to defining a schema for the representation of properties, Unicode itself selects a single representation from among all these aliases and thereafter keeps it stable. See [UAX42]. Therefore, we decided to follow that prescription for the purposes of this XML schema. In addition to stability, this scheme creates a unique representation for each combination of property and property value (and therefore a unique representation for any property-derived character class under this specification). It also makes LGRs from different sources more readily comparable. For documentation purposes, in the XML file, the comment field can be used, and tools might show both long and short forms to the user, as an aid in clarity. In response to the reported defect, I would thus suggest going the other way, by making the intent (always use the same alias as used in [UAX42] more explicit). -- -------------------------+------------------------------------------------- Reporter: | Owner: draft-ietf-lager- wil@cloudregistry.net | specification@tools.ietf.org Type: defect | Status: new Priority: major | Milestone: Component: | Version: specification | Resolution: Severity: - | Keywords: | -------------------------+------------------------------------------------- Ticket URL: lager From nobody Thu Dec 17 21:09:06 2015 Return-Path: X-Original-To: lager@ietfa.amsl.com Delivered-To: lager@ietfa.amsl.com Received: from localhost (ietfa.amsl.com [127.0.0.1]) by ietfa.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6083B1B3324 for ; In section 6.3 there is a possible missing disposition value, or, alternatively, the text should be adjusted. The sole disposition that could lead to a label being (eventually) delegated at this time is "allocatable", but the description of it makes sense only in the context of a "variant label" "allocatable The resulting string should be reserved for use by the same operator of the origin string, but not automatically allocated for use." In the root zone LGR work, we have been using "valid" for a disposition that is for an original label - this use is in contrast to "invalid", just as allocatable is in contrast to "reserved". As it stands the specification is defective, because "allocatable" implies that this is for a label other than the original label. I think there is some benefit to being able to give the original label a different disposition (i.e. "valid") than any variant label, in other words, a benefit to not conflate "allocatable" with "valid". Therefore, I suggest that we formally add "valid" to the list of recommended dispositions. -- -------------------------+------------------------------------------------- Reporter: | Owner: draft-ietf-lager- asmusf@ix.netcom.com | specification@tools.ietf.org Type: defect | Status: new Priority: major | Milestone: Component: | Version: specification | Keywords: Severity: - | -------------------------+------------------------------------------------- Ticket URL: lager From nobody Thu Dec 17 21:17:41 2015 Return-Path: X-Original-To: lager@ietfa.amsl.com Delivered-To: lager@ietfa.amsl.com Received: from localhost (ietfa.amsl.com [127.0.0.1]) by ietfa.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 281681B3330 for ; Thu, 17 Dec 2015 21:17:40 -0800 (PST) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at amsl.com X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -1.91 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-1.91 tagged_above=-999 required=5 tests=[BAYES_00=-1.9, T_RP_MATCHES_RCVD=-0.01] autolearn=unavailable Received: from mail.ietf.org ([4.31.198.44]) by localhost (ietfa.amsl.com [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id C5WZif31XwPS for ; Thu, 17 Dec 2015 21:17:39 -0800 (PST) Received: from zinfandel.tools.ietf.org (zinfandel.tools.ietf.org [IPv6:2001:1890:123a::1:2a]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 (128/128 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by ietfa.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4F4B81B332E for ; Thu, 17 Dec 2015 21:17:39 -0800 (PST) Received: from localhost ([::1]:41866 helo=zinfandel.tools.ietf.org) by zinfandel.tools.ietf.org with esmtp (Exim 4.82_1-5b7a7c0-XX) (envelope-from ) id 1a9nQA-0008SQ-Ta; Thu, 17 Dec 2015 21:17:38 -0800 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit From: "lager issue tracker" X-Trac-Version: 0.12.5 Precedence: bulk Auto-Submitted: auto-generated X-Mailer: Trac 0.12.5, by Edgewall Software To: draft-ietf-lager-specification@tools.ietf.org, asmusf@ix.netcom.com X-Trac-Project: lager Date: Fri, 18 Dec 2015 05:17:38 -0000 X-URL: https://tools.ietf.org/lager/ X-Trac-Ticket-URL: https://trac.tools.ietf.org/wg/lager/trac/ticket/30#comment:1 Message-ID: <076.566fc68f7a26fe5d1eda417c1d35732f@tools.ietf.org> References: <061.87f07c507f1e16c54a0fa28e181a9169@tools.ietf.org> X-Trac-Ticket-ID: 30 In-Reply-To: <061.87f07c507f1e16c54a0fa28e181a9169@tools.ietf.org> X-SA-Exim-Connect-IP: ::1 X-SA-Exim-Rcpt-To: draft-ietf-lager-specification@tools.ietf.org, asmusf@ix.netcom.com, lager@ietf.org X-SA-Exim-Mail-From: trac+lager@tools.ietf.org X-SA-Exim-Scanned: No (on zinfandel.tools.ietf.org); SAEximRunCond expanded to false Resent-To: draft-ietf-lager-specification@ietf.org Resent-Message-Id: <20151218051739.4F4B81B332E@ietfa.amsl.com> Resent-Date: Thu, 17 Dec 2015 21:17:39 -0800 (PST) Resent-From: trac+lager@tools.ietf.org Archived-At: Cc: lager@ietf.org Subject: Re: [Lager] [lager] #30 (specification): Missing disposition value? Also agreed that UAX42 provides a concise listing of the property aliases as well as the respective acceptable property values. However, UAX42 is not suitable -- at least in some cases -- as a reference because it is about the schema of '''UCDXML'''. For example, in Section 3.3.7 of the draft, we have: > The value of a given Unicode property in [UAX42] may change between versions, unless such change has been explicitly disallowed in [Unicode- Stability] This is referring to the concept of Unicode properties in general, and UAX42 does not seem to be the best fit as a reference. Perhaps simply deleting "in [UAX42]" would work, because "[Unicode-Stability]" has the relevant pointers to other documents. In Section 5.2, we have: > by referencing one of the Unicode character properties defined in the Unicode Character Database [UAX42]; Referencing the [http://www.unicode.org/reports/tr44/#Property_Definitions UAX44 Property Definitions] is much more appropriate here. Even in Section 5.2.3, we should further specify that we support the property names and values given in UAX42. Without this qualification, UAX42 prescribes its own schema (e.g. most properties are represented as XML attributes) which is unrelated to the XML schema that we're specifying here. -- -------------------------+------------------------------------------------- Reporter: | Owner: draft-ietf-lager- wil@cloudregistry.net | specification@tools.ietf.org Type: defect | Status: new Priority: major | Milestone: Component: | Version: specification | Resolution: Severity: - | Keywords: | -------------------------+------------------------------------------------- Ticket URL: lager
