IDN over EPP BOF (idnprov) Tuesday, November 9 at 1700-1800 ================================ CHAIR: Howard Eland (heland@afilias.info) AGENDA: - Presentation on Background and Problem - Presentation/Discussion on Two Main Approaches: IDN Object Mapping & Domain Mapping Extensions - Presentation on the three IDN-EPP drafts (and their operational experiences -- server side) - EPP parameters for .pl ccTLD (draft-zygmuntowicz-epp-pltld-03) - Internationalized Domain Name Mapping for the Extensible Provisioning Protocol (draft-sienkiewicz-epp-idn-00) - EPP Internationalized Domain Name Mapping (draft-chung-idnop-epp-idn-02) - Presentation by Registrar (client side experience) - Discussion on Next Steps DESCRIPTION: IDN-over-EPP As the global DNS applications and Top-Level Domain (TLD) registries begin to adopt the IDNA (Internationalized Domain Names in Applications) standards the registration of IDNs (Internationalized Domain Names) at shared registry systems becomes an important element of operational functionality for domain registries. Furthering the discussion from the PROVREG group, describing the "desire to allow a registrar to access multiple registries via the same protocol, even if the registries differ in operational models," there is interest for the same to apply to the provisioning of IDNs. Although the EPP RFCs have already provided extension guidelines, due to the foreseeable frequency of IDN provisioning and the potential complexity for registrars if different implementations are adopted by different registries, it makes sense to try to establish standardized extensions for IDN provisioning. In general, there are two main approaches to incorporating IDN provisioning elements to EPP: 1. Extensions to Domain Mapping; or 2. New IDN Object Mapping. The goal of this BOF is to see if there is enough interest from the community to create a workgroup that would be chartered to create documents on both: 1. Requirements of IDN provisioning 2. Standard Extensions for IDN-over-EPP Relevant RFCs and I-Ds: IDN-over-EPP I-Ds (some of the drafts are not reflected in the draft repository yet, provided below are temporary alternative URLs): - Internationalized Domain Name Mapping for the Extensible Provisioning Protocol (draft-sienkiewicz-epp-idn-00) http://IDNLink.info/I-D/draft-sienkiewicz-epp-idn-00.txt - EPP parameters for .pl ccTLD (draft-zygmuntowicz-epp-pltld-03) http://IDNLink.info/I-D/draft-zygmuntowicz-epp-pltld-03.txt - EPP Internationalized Domain Name Mapping (draft-chung-idnop-epp-idn-02) http://IDNLink.info/I-D/draft-chung-idnop-epp-idn-02.txt Relevant IDN RFCs - Internationalizing Domain Names in Applications (IDNA) http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3490 - Nameprep: A Stringprep Profile for Internationalized Domain Names (IDN) http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3491 - Punycode: A Bootstring encoding of Unicode for Internationalized Domain Names in Applications (IDNA) http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3492 - Preparation of Internationalized Strings ("stringprep") http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3454 EPP RFCs - Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3730 - Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) Domain Name Mapping http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3731 - Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) Host Mapping http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3732 - Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) Contact Mapping http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3733 - Guidelines for Extending the Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3735 Background IDN Registration Policies RFCs & I-Ds - Joint Engineering Team (JET) Guidelines for Internationalized Domain Names (IDN) Registration and Administration for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3743 - Registration of Internationalized Domain Names: Overview and Method http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-klensin-reg-guidelines-04.txt - Registration and Administration Guideline for Chinese Domain Names http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-xdlee-idn-cdnadmin-02.txt
