Room Configuration

GMT+0
[00:01:02] <Randy Bush> this operator thinks margaret is spot on
[00:01:02] <Alia Atlas> But it isn't primarily a configuration - but rather an interactive programmatic protocol
[00:01:31] <Alia Atlas> many parts of config are static or slowly changing
[00:02:06] Atarashi Yoshifumi joins the room
[00:02:16] Atarashi Yoshifumi leaves the room
[00:02:40] <adrianfarrel> One might ask "Why have NetConf if you will still need to use a CLI for some things?"
[00:02:56] <Randy Bush> @alia: so one protocol for things which chage less than daily and one for more frequent? puhleeze!
[00:03:44] <Randy Bush> @adrian: fix netconf. it has had a decade+
[00:03:45] <Margaret Wasserman> Hi Adrian, part of the initial design of netconf was meant to insure that we don't have that problem. The _entire_ configuration of a box can be represented in XML and manipulated via netconf, not just the parts that are represented in an IETF-defined data model.
[00:04:04] <Margaret Wasserman> IETF-defined parts are in an IETF namespace, and other parts are in other namespaces.
[00:04:09] <Randy Bush> damn but i hate agreeing with margaret :)
[00:04:21] <Alia Atlas> @Randy, no - not necessarily - it's the partial fast specifying & feedback loop
[00:05:36] <adrianfarrel> @randy: Ack. How do we know what needs to be fixed? What if this is the "Find the holes in netconf" working group?
[00:06:07] <Randy Bush> @adrian: do it in netconf
[00:06:34] <adrianfarrel> @randy: that is a possible resolution, yes
[00:06:39] <Randy Bush> that wg needs shaking up and put on a wake up
[00:06:55] <Randy Bush> [ and i take the blame for starting it ]
[00:07:29] <Jürgen Schönwälder> @randy: can you elaborate what is wrong with the netconf WG?
[00:08:24] <Randy Bush> that's cute dave, but now answer the question
[00:09:26] <Randy Bush> @jürgen: netconf works at a snail's pace. its lack of progress is what creates the vacuum that this ocean boiling sdn noise is trying to fill
[00:09:28] rjs joins the room
[00:10:05] <Randy Bush> @jürgen: netconf is still solving the problems of the '90s
[00:11:43] <Jürgen Schönwälder> @randy: well, some of the problems remain the same, regardless what the popular new name for them is
[00:14:38] Lars leaves the room
[00:14:57] Margaret Wasserman leaves the room
[00:17:04] <Jürgen Schönwälder> @randy: stuff takes time, creating a protocol, creating a data modeling language, creating data models, addressing access control, … - while things can always be faster, I do not think the netconf community is bad in terms of the substantial output produced over the timeline (but I am biased)
