[17:45:23] <jheffner@psc.edu> one of the difficulties with approaching this on the standards track is that icmp processing really was not architected with security in mind. trying to shoehorn security into icmp processing is problematic. (1) it does not provide "real" security, and (2) it often breaks some corner cases. implementors often face engineering trade-offs between breaking corner cases and working around real problems. standards documents are not good at expressing trade-offs, because they are usually required to be consistent with existing standards.
