Title: Liaison Statement from LEMONADE WG to Open Mobile Alliance Technical Plenary (OMA-TP) Received: 2 Feb 2005 From: Dean Willis The following was transmitted from IETF LEMONADE to OMA TP via liaison relay on Feb. 2, 2005 ------------------------ Title: LEMONADE introduction Source: IETF LEMONADE To: OMA TP Contact Persons: Name: Eric Burger Tel. Overall Description: The IETF LEMONADE work group (WG) is tasked to provide a set of enhancements and profiles of Internet email submission, transport, and retrieval protocols to facilitate operation on platforms with constrained resources, or communications links with high latency or limited bandwidth. A primary goal of this work is to ensure that those profiles and enhancements continue to interoperate with the existing Internet email protocols in use on the Internet, so that these environments and more traditional Internet users have access to a seamless service. The full description of the LEMONADE Charter, including documents and milestones, can be found here: http://ietf.org/html.charters/lemonade-charter.html 2. Request to OMA: The IETF LEMONADE WG has been made aware of your work on mobile email. As a result, we would like to make the OMA aware of our current work and understand its overlap with your work. LEMONADE is working on optimizing Internet email protocols for the mobile environment. We have identified a number of requirements that need to be met by the submission and retrieval protocols and are working to design enhancements to existing IMAP and SMTP protocols to realize these goals. In addition, we have identified requirements for event notifications and will soon be reviewing the protocol options for notifications. Finally, as indicated in our liaison to 3GPP, we are also documenting how our work will interact with the existing MMS infrastructure. We are currently scheduling to complete all of our work by the end of the year. To help us better understand your work and perhaps foster a working relationship, we have the following questions: 1. What is the scope and status of OMA work on IP-based mobile email? 2. What is the scope and status of OMA work on IP-based mobile email notifications? 3. Do OMA work items overlap the charter work items nearing completion in the IETF LEMONADE WG? We look forward to your response. 3.
