IETF 102 - ALTO Session Minutes Compiled by Jan Seedorf from Meetecho recording (key points, hums, decisions) Chair Slides (Vijay): Ñ Vijay: trying to close milestones / remaining WG items, then see what to do with the WG, options after the current milestones are done are either re-chartering or closing the WG, discussion should happen later today on this issue, both current chairs (Vijay, Jan) will not be available as chairs for a re-charter but will help with a transition if that will happen Ñ Vijay: good progress with remaining milestones, performance-metrics draft has gone under TSV-ART review to make progress, cost-calendar draft is out of the WG, xdom-discovery draft is ready to move out of the WG (waiting for one more revision, shepherd write-up ready), incr-update-sse is also post WGLC and just few remaining issues Ñ Vijay: remaining milestone drafts except performance-metrics will be discussed today: cdni-request-routing, path-vector, unified-props Ñ Richard Yang: performance-metrics authors will address comments from TSV_ART review and issue a new version soon Ñ Vijay: no face-to-face meeting in Bangkok, possibly a virtual meeting instead Remaining Issues in ALTO (Richard Yang) Ñ Richard presents on the Òbig pictureÓ regarding remaining issues in ALTO (see slides for details), big picture open issues are studying how to smartly *use* ALTO for network orchestration, and how to *integrate* infrastructure measurements smoothly into ALTO server information ÑVijay: good taxonomy and summary on the status of ALTO ALTO Survey (Shawn Lin) & Next Steps for WG / General Discussion Ñ Shawn presents on ALTO Survey (see slides for details) Ñ Mirja: question is to see if there is enough energy to finish more work on ALTO in a timely matter, also need to see if people from the industry come with key use cases and have an actual need for ALTO extensions for concrete problems, also need to consider if making ALTO very generic may also have drawbacks, as a complex ALTO framework may incur heavy implementations Ñ Lyle Bertz: have had ALTO system in production in the past, need to re-engage people from the industry to come to ALTO Ñ Mirja: Do people from the industry have a real need for ALTO solutions? Ñ Lyle: Answer is yes, but need to tie ALTO into overall orchestration for operators to be useful Ñ Bšrje: have interest in multi-domain orchestration with ALTO and the unicorn work Ñ Richard: plan to organise a workshop to elaborate on use cases with industry Ñ Sabine: mobile networks are very complex and heterogenic with respect to end user devices, there is a need for ALTO here to convey endpoint diversity information (e.g. for multiparty communication) Ñ Mirja: need to align with other WGs, this may also raise interest in ALTO ÑVijay: interest from vendors and operators in ALTO, problem is the backlog with work items, so need to finish the outstanding milestones asap (hopefully within the next two IETF meetings) and then discuss on re-chartering
