- Responsible for binding between tags and routes
- Consists of tag allocation and maintenance procedures:
- allocate a tag
- bind a tag to a route
- distribute tag binding information among tag switches:
- uses Tag Distribution Protocol (TDP), or
- piggyback on existing protocols
- BGP via the “tag” attribute
- RSVP via an RSVP “object”
- PIM
