IETF-79 Working Group meeting minutes Thanks to Dan King for having taken the minutes. 1) WG Status - Charter-review - Two new WG documents - See slides - Good progress on RPL specification - Need to consider management model. MIB was initially proposed. 2) Update on Routing Metrics used for Path Calculation in Low Power and Lossy Networks Presenter was Dominique Barthel. - Ticket 84 (Node energy is a ratio, not an absolute value) was specifically highlighted. The relative value is a good indication, if there is a need for a value then an absolute value could be added at some future point. - Co-authors mentioned that they received feedback on the addition of future constraints, cross-talk, etc. New metrics could be added as needed. 3) RPL update (need to upload RPL update slides) Presenter was Pascal - Three RPL new revisions since Maastricht (IETF78). - All RPL tickets resolved. - There are about 15 RPL implementations. - RPL Document passed WG Last Call, IETF Last Call and number of reviews from Directorates. - Margaret mentioned that there is a requirement for document that discusses the differences between RPL and 6lowpan. Pascal agreed that an architecture document that discusses how both protocols fit and work together would be beneficial. - JP also mentioned that an applicability statement might also be valuable. For both documents the WG chairs of ROLL and 6lowpan would need to discuss which WG’s these documents would be developed in. The 6lowpan co-chair (Carsten), Pascal and Margaret all stated they would be interested in working on these documents. - There was concern with the number of options available (within RPL?). This may cause issues with interoperability over 6lowpan, so perhaps an additional document is needed. JP highlighted that IEEE P1901.2 will support RPL over narrowband. Carsten (6lowpan co-chair) would be willing to bring this work into his group. 4) Reactive Discovery of Point-to-Point Routes in Low Power and Lossy Networks Presenter was Emmanuel. - The authors are gated on draft-thubert-6man-reverse-routing-header-00 and they requested an update from Pascal (author). Pascal mentioned he is willing to work on the draft. JP requested Pascal to copy the roll WG list when he sends updates to the 6lowpan list. - JP requested a poll of people willing to help on this document. 10 hands raised. 5) Lightweight Key Establishment and Management Protocol in Dynamic Sensor Networks (KEMP) Presenter was Ying Qiu - One question from the WG. Unfortunately it was not clear over the microphones. The presenter requested that the question be handled after the session face to face. 5) ROLL Re-chartering Discussion Open WG discussion - Areas under discussion as possible recharter items include: o Management Model o Lightweight cryptographic algorithms o Label switching o Use of PCE for path computation o Siblings o ND options dissemination o DAD interaction with backbone link / router o RPL on not so lossy links - Pascal, Kris, Phil and Dominic have provided some suggestions on rechartering topics. Pascal will specifically provide some feedbackon ND options dissemination. What is done on the backbone router should work for RPL and 6lowpan. Some issues have been identified, for instance the backbone router cannot distinguish between multiple paths with RPL, and this may be a new work item. - JP requested that people take some items and seed roll mailing list with their plans to work on some recharter topics. - Question (name unknown): is RPL a bootstrap protocol? Pascal felt RPL can bootstrap subnets. - Lin Tian requested clarification on management model. Will RPL use MIBs or something else? JP highlighted that this is an open area. RPL has a management section but this is an area for discussion. -Margaret mentioned that the WG should consider RPL interaction to non-RPL devices (non RPL hosts) and between protocols (the latter being raised by JP). - Carsten (with co-chair hat off) also agrees that the management model is an important area. Their needs to be discussion on the data model, then management mechanism can be discussed. Carsten (with co-chair hat on), the routing protocol is transparent to the hosts in the network. We should not make changes to plumbing (ND) protocols without the two working groups (6lowpan and roll) discussing this. - Julien Meuric (with PCE co-chair hat on) management is very important, it’s good to see this on your recharter list. It is also relevant to discuss how PCE may be used with roll. - The roaming problem space was also raised. This is something WG members may consider. - JP ended the session with a request for feedback on the list regarding the recharter items as this will help with IESG discussions.
