Oyster is the cheapest way to pay for single journeys on bus, Tube, tram, and DLR services in London.
Please NOTE: All travelers are required to have their own card - although the Web site states all children under 11 travel free accompanied by an adult using a valid Visitor Oyster card or ticket. A maximum of four children under 11 can travel free with an adult who has a valid Visitor Oyster card or ticket on Tube, DLR and London Overground services.
If you’re using a Visitor Oyster card, you must touch in and touch out as normal but ask a member of staff to let your group through the side gate.
Cycle (bike) rental is available from docking stations all over London.

If you have an Apple or compatible C8 cable or plug you wish to swap, this table lists the known cables and plugs, and you can nominate a swap or add your own. The box of cables is kept by email@example.com at present, while I work out how to coordinate a swap trust point.
the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schuko standard, and http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEC_60320 and http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/AC_power_plugs_and_sockets may help clarify what is what
If you have other cables, please feel free to add details here, clarifying in notes how you can be contacted to effect a swap.
Any leftovers will probably just be left at the terminal room for lucky dip.

For people traveling to London, I recommend getting a “Three” pay-as-you-go SIM card for your phone. They're available at Heathrow airport when you land. Right after you go though immigration, you'll see vending machines selling SIM cards. You can get a Three SIM card for £20, which is £5 for the SIM, and £15 for 30 days of unlimited data, 300 UK voice minutes and 3000 texts. The package contains a Nano-SIM, plus adapters for Micro-SIM and Mini-SIM phones, so it should work with anything. You may need to add some additional credit for making international calls.
If you order in advance instead of waiting until you get to the airport, you can save the £5 charge for the SIM card. You can also skip the £15 package if you like, and just pay for what you use: 3p per minute for voice, 2p per text, 1p per megabyte of data. A free SIM plus £10 of credit should be enough for the whole IETF week (and that £10 would also be usable for international calls). <http://www.three.co.uk/Store/SIM/Pay_As_You_Go>
In other news, I recently switched my US phone to the T-Mobile “Simple Choice Plan”. I get voice, text and data for $50/month, which by itself is not especially remarkable. What's remarkable is that in over 100 countries (including the UK) I also get unlimited text and data, and voice calls cost only 20¢/minute. That's another attractive option for people coming from the US.

Suggested criteria: distance to the Hilton of course, but also level of noise, if people are looking for a place to discuss Internet-Drafts.

Useful Location Map on where to find espresso created by Dan Wing. “I built a London espresso map, with red locations based on positive reviews on coffeegeek.com and home-barista.com and a few others. The shops in blue appear to be better-than-average places near the Metropole hotel. The map can be edited.” (Thank you, Dan!)
